Părintele Efrem Vatopedinul s-a născut în 1956 în localitatea Peristeronopighí din Cipru. După încheierea studiilor liceale, în 1974 a intrat la Facultatea de Teologie a Universităţii din Atena. A absolvit în 1978 şi s-a întors în Cipru unde, în 1979 a fost numit profesor la Şcoala Bisericească „Apostolul Varnava” din Nicosia. În 1981 a hotărât să devină monah la Sfântul Munte, intrând în obştea lui Gheronda Iosif. A fost hirotonit diacon în 1983 şi preoțit în 1984. După ce a fost ales egumen la Vatoped, Părintele Efrem a preluat administrarea mănăstirii şi îndrumarea duhovnicească a monahilor acesteia.

În timp foarte scurt, Gheronda Efrem a reuşit să reaşeze din punct de vedere liturgic și tipiconal mănăstirea, să o restaureze în cea mai mare parte, să îi conserve vechile odoare şi să se îngrijească de întreaga ei zestre materială. Mănăstirea, care astăzi numără peste 110 monahi, a ajuns să fie cel mai mare așezământ de călugări din Grecia.
